The Simpson Family Papers consist mainly of correspondence and photographs. The bulk of the correspondence, contained in seven folders, covers the period 1929 to 1939, when work on the carriage road system was in the process of completion. Major correspondents are chief engineer, Paul D. Simpson, John D. Rockefeller, Jr., and his office staff. Topics covered include engineering techniques and problems, establishment of boundarylines, purchase of lots, placement of the roads, and legal issues. Thereare also scattered letters to and from other members of Rockefeller's design team, including the Olmsted Brothers firm, architect Grosvenor Atterbury, and landscape gardener Beatrix Farrand. Also present are 329 printsand negatives depicting the completed roads and bridges as well as construction methods and equipment.

In 1899 she achieved the distinction of being the only female founding member of the American Society of Landscape Architecture. Charles P. Simpson served from 1913 to 1922 as chief engineer for John D. Rockefeller, Jr., building the carriage road system for Rockefeller's private summer estate at Seal Harbor, Maine.
